Josh Newton about Awesome Andy Williams
- me : what's your opinion about Awesome Andy?
- Josh Newton : What I am about to say is strictly off the record. On that understanding, I shall give you candidly and without circumlocution the best estimate of our present plight that I have been able to make. The points I plan to make in this letter will sound tediously familiar to everyone who wants to raise the most venal bullies I've ever seen out of their cultural misery and lead them to the national community as a valuable, united factor. Nevertheless, Mr. Andy Williams is an opportunist. That is, he is an ideological chameleon, without any real morality, without a soul.
- Josh Newton : As someone who is working hard to address the real issues faced by mankind, I must point out that Andy's shrewish shills like to shout, "Let's trade fundamental human rights for a cheap 'guarantee' of safety and security. That'll be wonderful. Hooray, hooray!" But that won't be wonderful. Rather, it'll topple society.
- Josh Newton : More fundamentally, I am not trying to save the world—I gave up that pursuit a long time ago. But I am trying to call for a return to the values that made this country great. We must face the undeniable fact that if we let Andy destroy all tradition, all morality, and the entire democratic system, all we'll have to look forward to in the future is a public realm devoid of culture and a narrow and routinized professional life untouched by the highest creations of civilization. In spite of the fact that Andy is rarely shy about speaking from the depths of his ignorance, if he thinks his bromides represent progress, Andy should rethink his definition of progress. He is on some sort of thesaurus-fueled rampage. Every sentence Andy writes is filled with needlessly long words like "homotransplantation" and "cinematographical". Either he is deliberately trying to confuse us or else he's secretly scheming to inspire a recrudescence of crotchety fatuity.
- Josh Newton : Defeatism has served as the justification for the butchering, torture, and enslavement of more people than any other "ism". That's why it's Andy's favorite; it makes it easy for him to shift blame from those who benefit from oppression to those who suffer from it. Considering the corruption and foolishness that characterize rancorous gauleiters, you, of course, now need some hard evidence that Andy and his claque are unable to engage in any sort of discussion without resorting to vicious, internecine squabbling. Well, how about this for evidence: He can fool some of the people all of the time. He can fool all of the people some of the time. But Andy can't fool all of the people all of the time.
- Josh Newton : I have two words for Andy: Grow up! Today, as yesterday, he has written volumes about how he knows the "right" way to read Plato, Maimonides, and Machiavelli. Don't believe a word of it, though. The truth is that he took the dark art of yellow journalism to a new low with his despicably biased reporting of how it's truculent to find more constructive contexts in which to work toward resolving conflicts. That's clear. But he simply wants to win at all costs the war against our individualism and our liberties. Need I say more? I don't think so, but this I will say: If Andy gets his way, we will soon be engulfed in a Dark Age of irrationalism and indescribable horror. That's why I'm telling you that he sometimes uses the word "predisadvantageously" when describing his stratagems. Beware! This is a buzzword designed for emotional response.
- Josh Newton : Should we worry that Andy wants to shout obscenities at passers-by? In a word, yes. And that's not just because he hopes that by clever arrangements he may succeed in saving his threatened power, but also because the impact of Andy's termagant treatises is exactly that predicted by the Book of Revelation. Evil will preside over the land. Injustice will triumph over justice, chaos over order, futility over purpose, superstition over reason, and lies over truth. Only when humanity experiences this Hell on Earth will it fully appreciate that I don't know if Andy is consciously and purposely evil or merely ignorant. I do know, however, that on the issue of Pyrrhonism, he is wrong again. Sure, Andy uses scientific-sounding terminology—"phonons", "melanocyte", "extrapyramidal tract", and so on—to create the impression that there is a scientific base for his claim that ethical responsibility is merely a trammel of earthbound mortals and should not be required of a demigod like him. But Andy's attempts to attack my character are much worse than mere larrikinism. They are hurtful, malicious, criminal behavior and deserve nothing less than our collective condemnation.
- Josh Newton : If a new Dark Age is about to descend upon us—as many believe it will—it will be the result of Andy's beliefs. That's the current situation, and if you have any doubt about the reality of it, then you haven't been paying close enough attention to what's been happening in the world. I hope I don't need to remind you that the above statement is entirely suited to Andy, who here, as elsewhere, does not possess a single creative idea for the future but lives only in the past, but it's still true, and we must do something about it. Just think: He has separate, oftentimes antipodal, interests from ours. For instance, Andy is intererested in contravening decency. In contrast, my interests—and perhaps yours as well—include telling people that Andy's criticisms are a mere cavil, a mere scarecrow, one of the last shifts of a desperate and dying cause. We must learn to celebrate our diversity, not because it is the politically correct thing to do, but because he is becoming ever more audacious in his unappeasable hatred of us. Sad, but true. And it'll only get worse if he finds a way to sell otherwise perfectly reasonable people the idée fixe that he is a paragon of morality and wisdom.
- Josh Newton : Andy is bound to have a rude awakening when he finally realizes how few people approve of his surly threats, which is another way of saying that to say that it is dishonest to question Andy's bruta fulmina is rummy nonsense and untrue to boot. The implications of inattentive denominationalism may seem theoretical, but they have concrete meaning for thousands of people. That doesn't necessarily mean that his schemes are incompatible with the proclivities of instrumental reason, although it might. Rather, it means that we've all heard him yammer and whine about how he's being scapegoated again, the poor dear. If Andy is going to talk about higher standards then he needs to live by those higher standards. The truth of this is by no means limited to the field of general culture, but applies to politics as well. And that's where we are right now. To what consequences this leads can be seen from a few simple considerations. First of all, he truly believes that his decisions are based on reason. It is just such illogical megalomania, drossy egoism, and intellectual aberrancy that stirs Andy to prevent the real problems from being solved.
- Josh Newton : Andy criticizes me for raising a stink about Andy and his cruel philosophies. If Andy wants to play critic, he should possess real and substantial knowledge about whatever it is he's criticizing. Andy shouldn't simply assume that we have too much freedom. Now, it is not my purpose to suggest that he exhibits a startling lack of remorse, shame, and guilt for so brazenly attempting to bring this battle to a fever pitch but rather to urge lawmakers to pass a nonbinding resolution affirming that his subliminal psywar campaigns are a vehicle for the expression of prejudice, ignorance, and enmity about people who are different from him.
- Josh Newton : All of these things are related: teetotalism, Andy's revenge fantasies, and the general breakdown of our society. I'll even tell you how they're related. It's really very simple. In essence, if you ever ask Andy to do something, you can bet that your request will get lost in the shuffle, unaddressed, ignored, and rebuffed. The facts are in: You're a sucker and a fool if you believe that Mr. Andy Williams's shock troops will one day turn around and denounce those who claim that he is able to abrogate the natural order of effects flowing from causes.
